When the Sun Goes Down in the City…

On our First Subaru Nightlife Travels, we stopped off at a car wash to rinse away more than a week’s worth of dirty snow and road salt before venturing out into the night.  It was one of those unmanned car washes, the kind where you pull up to a machine and a female voice instructs you on what to do.  Without hesitation, I jumped a step ahead, putting my ATM card in before selecting the type of car wash desired.  “The voice” was none too pleased I had not followed instructions properly, and politely scolded me for not following the directions.  We finished paying, entered the bay, and a lone robotic…

Lesson 7: Failure is not an option…

Let’s be real… It’s been 2 weeks since the Thanksgiving holiday… Many of us were energetic and had good intentions of starting a new exercise plan. It was perfect timing…the in between holidays…the perfect time to shed a few pounds…maybe a new beginning with a pre-kickoff New Year fitness routine. But something happened… Maybe you never got started? Maybe you tried exercising for a day or two, then gave up? Maybe you are so sore and tired, you think it can’t be done? Maybe it got tough and you lost your will to fight? Maybe you saw no immediate result and said, “the heck with this?” Or worse yet, gained…

    Life Lesson: What fuels you?

What fuels YOUR inspiration? For me, I was tired of getting the sand kicked in my face (metaphorically speaking). It was the summer of 1978, almost 40 years ago… I picked up my first Muscle Builder and Power Magazine. On the cover were three iconic bodybuilders:  Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, and Frank Zane. All three of these guys were well-known in the sport for almost two decades, but this was my first exposure to a magazine that would later become Muscle & Fitness.  These guys were gargantuan, especially Schwarzenegger and Columbu.  Frank Zane was slightly smaller and had a more symmetrical and aesthetic appeal.  Zane had won the Mr. Olympia…

    45 Day Beach Challenge Update!

For all those tuning into our Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/FitTo100/ and https://www.facebook.com/myroadmystory/ note we kicked off a 45-Day Beach-Ready Challenge 8 days ago. We have a family vacation coming up in January and want to look our best and have been using this personal challenge to get in better shape. This comes on the heels of Anita and I both sustaining serious injuries (I tore my ACL four months ago) and (Anita broke her ankle 7 weeks ago) so we are both in injury-recovery mode and facing an uphill battle. It definitely hasn’t been easy. We must confess to slipping on our diet last night. Craving carbs after a long…

The Hunt for the Elusive Grilled Cheese Sandwich

It is almost December, and for the most part of this fall going into winter, the weather in this part of the country has been uncommonly warm, but if you live in plains country you know that winter can and will come at any time. We can have 50 + degree weather and it will turn on a dime and drop 20-30 degrees just like that. Today is a perfect example, the weather man was reporting 50’s and 60’s all this week, with the lows being in the high 40’s towards the end of the week. This morning when I got to work at 7:30 it was really nice out,…

    Lesson 6: Who you foolin’?

Are you living the Greatest Lie Ever Told? You’ve been lied to and cheated. Now, the greatest lie ever told could cost you your lease on life. What I have to tell you today is unnerving… so unnerving, it could shake your faith in what we’ve been led to believe that rolling back the clock is impossible.  Truth is, I’ve lived it.  I’ve lived under the shadows of age, health and slowing down converging as one as we get older.   It doesn’t have to be that way.   There is a secret to turning your life around, centered in our diet.  I’ve traveled down this path of uncontrollable aches, pains, stiffness,…

    Lesson 5: The Cowardly Lion

Thanksgiving is upon us…you find yourself 25, 30, 35 lbs overweight. Maybe you’re not overweight at all, and just want a little body tone up. Firm up those thighs.  Tuck in the tummy.  Or tighten those arms. What are you afraid of? “Lions? Tigers? And Bears?” So the story goes in the Land of Oz… Dorthy, the Tin Man and Scarecrow go deeper into the forest.  It’s getting dark.  They begin to worry over what evil may lie in the woods ahead, just then the Cowardly Lion jumps out to ‘greet’ them momentarily scaring them away from reaching their goal. We all have had a Cowardly Lion that has gotten…

Lesson 4: Are You Truly Motivated?

Motivation… It comes down to one simple thing, how bad do you want it? Are you tired of being fat? Out of shape? Worn out? Sore? Like the Chinese proverb, “A journey of a 1,000 miles, begins with one step… why not start your fitness journey now? Don’t let the excuse of the holidays be your barrier. Embrace it.  Visualize it.  Then own it! My Winter Time Plan  I always use the winter to work on my weaknesses. Refine my core.  Strengthen my joints, tendons, muscles. “Low and slow” is my motto in the winter time. Rarely do I break a sweat this time of year.  Rather, I’m doing low…
